Well its July 3rd and the town is packed with visitors . Thought this place would be packed . Far from it . Was like a retirement home. Food was average and over priced.menu was dated. Had a perch sandwich and fries for 10.95 I've had better fish sandwiches from McDonalds . So far i have had perch sandwiches at every restaurant in town and The Buck has the best over all for flavor and price and the business is hoping. Sorry But I've spent my last penny here.

Very mediocre food, better than nothing. My "pan fried perch" was flat, squarish and tasteless. This had obviously been fried directly from it's pre breaded frozen state. The garlic mashed potatoes were tired and had been waiting a long time. The mixed veges were the best thing on the plate and that's saying a lot. For $21 I felt like I had been robbed. My daughter had the chicken winglets and the server described them as tiny chicken legs, but of course they were chicken wings. The house salad was mainly lettuce. They have a great location, right off of Lake Michigan, but it was not very clean and it felt as though the management was bored and tired. Eat elsewhere as this place is not worth the three stars it has.

My husband and I have been here twice now. The first time I was nervous due to some of the things I've heard about Schu's but we were both pleasantly surprised. We came back a second time on Easter (we couldn't fine anything else open) and though the wait was long, it was SO worth it! They had a special brunch buffet going on and it was some of the best food I've ever eaten. Would check this place out!

Ugh. We found ourselves starving on Sunday night and everywhere closed at 9. Everywhere except Schu's. First off. Their bathroom was filthy. Paper allll over the floor and their toilet didn't flush. It was gross. The building reminded me of an episode of Gordon Ramsey's restaurant nightmares. Ugly. Wood. Dated. Very dated. Their location is prime. They have beautiful views of the Lake. What a shame. Damn. The bartender. He was a chode. Seriously. Talking to his buddies about girls. That's the PG version. The food. Underwhelming. Wasn't good. Wasn't bad. I was starving it did the trick. Just a bad atmosphere. Waste of a great location.

First impression: We stopped in tonight and sat at the bar. The bartender was very busy but never even made eye contact with us. She was mad about something and another employee had to shush her. Another server appeared and waited on us and did a good job. We thought the food was good and thought maybe we misjudged the place. Then, several employees started talking about how they were the only restaurant open ((Labor Day). The employees, not our server, were obviously unhappy to be there. It didn't really make us feel like appreciated customers.

Worst experience ever at restaurant! Served bread bowls full of mold and the staff wasn't fazed one bit, cold food and spilled beer. Stay away from this place, they seem to think they are invincible due to their location.

This is my first review of a restaurant... Ever! I'm a very easy going person who rarely has anything negative to say about anything or anyone! I guess there is a first for everything. My boyfriend and I just recently moved to the Saint Joseph area. We've heard great things about Schu's and finally tried it on Saturday. First off, it took about 10 minutes before we ever saw someone. It wasn't busy, there were open tables and no wait to be seated. We weren't in a hurry so we let it go. Then the drinks. It took another 10 minutes to get two cocktails and waters. My boyfriend ordered a piña colada. There was so much alcohol in this drink that it wasn't even slushy and you could see the brown rum sitting on the top of the drink. Sure you're thinking we got more than what we paid for, but this was a casual dinner and we weren't looking to get drunk at 5:00 in the evening. This did not taste like any piña colada I've ever had. It was awful. Next was the appetizer. We ordered the bruschetta and it came out very quickly which was great, but it was tomatoes on soggy bread. The description said there would be asparagus and balsamic vinegar and there was barely any of either. The tomatoes on it were juicy and delicious, but everything else was soggy and poor. Then the entrées. I ordered Schu's award winning (yes award winning) mac and cheese. It's description said topped with breadcrumbs and Parmesan cheese. It took 45 mins to an hour for our food to come out. We kept saying "oh it's probably the mac and cheese because it has to be baked." I kid you not, this came out looking (and tasting) like the velveeta shells package that you buy at the grocery store for 2 bucks. It was most definitely not baked and there were no breadcrumbs or Parmesan on top either. I've had homemade mac and cheese plenty of times and this was not homemade. It was liquidy and the sauce was not sticking to the shells. I expected this to be baked and creamy with browned breadcrumbs and Parmesan on top. I, at one point, thought maybe they gave me the kids menu version. I understand mac and cheese is a unique choice on a menu (I rarely order this out), but anytime something says award winning, I'm willing to try. I highly recommend not ordering it on your visit unless you'd like to pay $15 for velveeta and shells. My boyfriend had the NY strip burger. It was mediocre. It was hammered down dry steak on bread. Lastly, I usually don't give waitresses a hard time because I've been there and know it can be hard, but our waitress came to us about 3 times in our time there - basically delivering our food and grabbing our check. We expected a little more since we had ordered drinks and appetizers but received very little attention. We intended on having dessert there too, but we chose not to give anymore money to this restaurant. $54 + 15% tip (more generous than I wanted to be) later and we were very disappointed. We won't be coming back here. There was nothing great about this experience.

Nice place! Had the perch sandwich and was impressed that they let the fish speak for itself! A bit understaffed, but the experience was very nice. Enjoyed watching how many people order the salmon patty special! Huge!

Stopped on a Tuesday night for dinner. Reasonable prices, especially for pitchers of beer (local craft brews like Founders). Although, I'm comparing it to Washington, DC prices, so maybe I'm a bit biased. My then fiance, now husband and I each had steak. He had the ribeye and I had the NY Strip. He raved about their "special" mash. A layered creation of garlic mashed potatoes and mashed sweet potatoes. Steaks were cooked to order perfectly at medium rare. Server was super friendly and their was a great view of the sunset over the lake.

Went specifically for Tuesday Sushi night. My wife doesn't indulge in it but I love it. I will admit I have had it all over the country and certainly there is a lot better than Schu's, but it was pretty darn good. I just had a Chicago Roll. This was Tempura Crab Meat, Jalapeño and Cream Cheese in the roll. It is topped with Seared Salmon and Ahi Tuna. It then has what they call 505 spicy sauce which appears to be Mayo and Siracha? Very tasty and well put together and rolled very tightly (which is a must). In the little SW part of Michigan we are severely hampered by a lack of good sushi, so their Tuesday night deal is good. Very limited Sushi menu with about 6 rolls on there. They seemed willing to do some custom stuff as the folks next to us got some substitutions. I will be back to try another roll. They obviously have their full menu on Tuesdays too. My wife got the 3 sliders, she liked them, but didn't think they were awesome. Very light crowd too. Maybe Summer will bring more in for Sushi night.

One of the worst meals I've had in a while. Not busy but very slow service. Forgot to bring part of the order then disappeared for a long time. Steak sandwich was so gristly that I couldn't cut it with a steak knife.

Pulled pork was my choice today. Messy but incredibly good!

I was hoping for the food to be a little better. The menu is sort of all over the place. A bar and grill seems like I could have gotten a steak that didn't cost $34 or a non Marsala chicken breast. The random seafood dishes didn't quite say grill either. I brought 3 kids thinking it would be nice to sit and see the water but no kids menus or any kid entertainment mean that as a family we probably wouldn't come back. Maybe grown ups for a drink. The lobster bisque was very salty. My daughter said the burger was good.

Just spent $75 on dinner with the hubs. We don't go to Schu's often and now we remember why. Same old clunky wood decor. I had heard there was a new owner and chef and saw a $22 salmon special on Facebook tonight. The ad said there was salmon, cheese polenta and ratatouille. The salmon came on some very pasty white polenta with unmelted bits of cheese in it along with some diced peppers and zucchini on top, no sauce, didn't look cooked at all. Definitely didn't look like the photo. As I am not a fan of raw-ish peppers, I had them take them off and it was salmon and polenta. For $22, not worth it. Plain. No sides at all, nothing. The calamari was not browned, the side sauce was still frozen. The hubs caesar salad was good, he said. A very expensive experience that wasn't really good. Oh well. Lesson learned.

Had a quick (well, we were hoping it'd be quick) lunch here and it was just so so. I had nachos, which was mostly just chips with some ground meat and cheese. Nothing exciting but it was fine. Also had the gumbo which was alright also, being from Louisiana, it's always a gamble ordering it. We sat inside and the space was good, not too crowded, or loud,

    (3)
  • Ritu R.

All our entrees were bland. Thai shrimp is one if the few flavorful items. The food was overpriced but you are paying for the view. If you sit on the patio on a summer day the low grade food is passable. You are paying chicago prices for a below average dinner.

While we were in St. Joe yesterday, we had experienced extremely long lines at two restaurants we had wanted to go to, so we thought we'd go to Schus. When we arrived they were very slow. This surprised us, but also made us worry as it had been a while since we had been there. The food was good, but wait staff was poor. We had a bigger party, so they pulled some tables together before sitting us. We ordered drinks, mostly waters, but two soda's. Drinks came out 10 minutes later. Miss the days when restaurants had water on the table. The order was taken and appetizers arrived including soup, salads and onion rings. Our waitress did bring plates, however, there was not silverware. We asked for it. Five minutes or so later she came by to check on the appetizers and we said we have not recieved silverware yet. She said they did not bring it out. Not sure who they is, but, Schus was not busy. There is not excuse for a table not having silverware prior to food being brought out. If it is, the wait staff for that table should do nothing until that is covered. Otherwise, you are staring at your food as it gets cold. Sorry to say, this is not the first time this has happened at schus. We will go back as the food is good, they do need to work on training the front of the house.

Great little outdoor area just on top of the bluff with a nice view of the lake. Steak and fish was very good. Calamari is awesome, especially with one of the sauces. I think it was called 707 sauce.

We visited last Friday night with a group of 10. We were seated with little wait. Our party had multiple challenges for a server - lots of special dietary needs and separate checks. Our server, Paige, handled us graciously and never missed a beat. The food was great. I had the Whitefish special and it was wonderful. Everyone was happy with their meals, including the 6 tweens/teens with us. We appreciate the respect for our situation and gluten/dairy/sugar free restrictions.

For being the closest restaurant to the lake it has such an old vibe. What's with the uniforms for the waitstaff. It feels like a bad 90s movie set. Not the great casual fun summer atmosphere you expect "on the water".

I had the ribs, a great meal! Marty was our server and I couldn't ask for better service! Way to go! I do miss Larry but still had a great experience. I will be back next time I'm in St Joe.

I'm surprised at all the negative reviews of this restaurant. The bachelorette party group I was with decided to come here for dinner before we got the night started. Before even going in, we asked the hostess if it would be okay that we were coming here wearing penis headbands (there were only two girls that were) and she said it was fine. We sit down for dinner, really aren't talking much louder than other people, and the manager comes by and tells us to take them off because we've offended a family there and they left. Boo hoo. I heard a dad tell his kids they were rabbit ears and all was well with them. Later, the manager came by and told us it was fine and that he was really sorry, but he was told that he had to tell us something about it but really, he wanted us to enjoy our time and not to worry about it. Our server was also really great and she put up with a big group of girls who were all over the place. All of our checks were separate and she was great about the whole thing. I gave her a good tip for being such a good sport. The food was pretty good. You can get some decent food for a good price here. My burger and fries were great and a lot of the stuff the other girls got looked delish too. We enjoyed our experience here and would come back again.

Looking for unexpected excellence?Delightfully surprised with the today special at Shu's Grill and Bar. I was looking for a fresh catch of the day, pan seared. They had the Chilean Seabass topped with a fresh tropical shrimp salsa and served with cilantro rice and fresh grilled asparagus. The suggested wine: Echo Bay Sauvignon Blanc was an excellent pairing. They cooked it to my requested preference. We had the crab cake appetizer with fresh mango salsa and it was very nice. This place exceeded my expectations. The food was delicious and our server, Chad was very knowledgeable and made sure we were completely happy.

We were waited on after several tables were seated after us and waited on first. The lobster bisque was too thick, tomato bisque was good. I ordered the prime rib sandwich which was extremely salty and well done served with COLD mashed potatoes that were overly seasoned with garlic, which cost $15 plus $3 for the cup of soup. My husband got the fish and chips, which he said was actually very good. The waitress was slow and inattentive. The only thing good was the view of the lake at sunset which was amazing. We stopped here based on a Pure Michigan travel guide recommendation- for our anniversary- and we were deeply disappointed. The food is also way over priced. I did not get the perch dinner because it only came with 6 pieces of perch for $22! The decor is also a little dated. We left a 10% tip which we never do. If the place had been busy and therefore the waitress not as attentive, she would have received a 20% tip. It almost seemed like she was the owner's daughter and was just going through the motions.

The food is ok but the service was pretty poor. I never got a water refill and we had to flag down another server for some side sauce because we never saw ours until our check came.

I don't think this place is that terrible. This place boasts of views of Lake Michigan but indoors I think it's only a portion of the place that can actually see bits of Lake Michigan. We stopped here for lunch on a Saturday afternoon and there was no wait.. I feel like their menu is missing something or I probably thought their lunch menu should be bigger than 20 items. I wanted something light so I had the crabcake appetizer and my husband had the burge The crabcakes were pretty tasty. They weren't the best but they weren't the worst I've ever had. It came with some mango salad which was blech. The mango dressing was just didn't go well with the fruit. I wish I had the burger like my husband did. The bun was really soft and the burger was grilled well. The fries were some battered fries and they were addicting to eat. I kind of wish I had his meal. The service was prompt so nothing to complain about there. If I return to St Joseph's Mi, I'm not sure if I'd return to Schu's grill.

Have been there a number of times with great food. Recent visits seem like there has been a change in atmosphere and food quality. Service, and overall lighting and cleanliness was well below what the usually feel was previously. Food served included instant mashed potatoes with salmon dinner that had a reheated temperature and texture. Have reconsidered going back in hopes that management gets back to the old way of doing things over there.

Went there on a Saturday night. Not many people there because of the nasty weather. I ordered the Salmon and it was great with a side of vegetables. Even though we were only 1 of 8 people there the service/food overall was great. Nice atmosphere for a date or even just a drink. Ask for Logan at the bar. He always has a nice smile and very professional!

After racing across the lake Friday night and taking a nap on the boat we were searching for some breakfast. Stopped in at Schu's after being told they were a great breakfast place only to discover, as our server put it, "the kitchen staff is so "over" breakfast they have moved on to lunch" at least 15 min before the official change over. Big bummer as that was the reason we were there. Well we ordered off their lunch menu which was your standard fare of sandwiches, burgers etc. nothing exceptional but not bad just an average sandwich. No one raved about their meal and no on complained. Service... I have had better. Perhaps it was the crush of having 90 boats pull in from Chicago after racing all night looking for some good food that overwhelmed them, not sure.

I have been to Schu's Grill & Bar a handful of times both for breakfast and dinner. The service isnt bad but isnt stellar and the food is below average for what you pay for but not bad. The al fresco dining is what brings me here and the beautiful views of the sunset.

Good food and nice restaurant overall. I have been coming here since they opened many years ago and have always had positive experiences. Extensive craft beer list is a big plus. Scallops are large and tasty. Close to the lake and located in downtown St. Joe.

We went there last night for a quick bite before heading back to our hotel. This place is always busy during the day but by the time we arrived we were the only ones in the restaurant. We had some drinks, salads and apps. Overall the experience was very relaxing.

We were in St. Joseph this past weekend, and were looking for someplace for a late lunch. We saw Schu's Grill and Bar...and I was in the mood for bar food, so we wandered in. If you're looking for a dive bar, this isn't it. Actually, I found the service (and attitude of the server) to be quite pretentious. If that's your "thing", you'll love this place, but it wasn't quite what I expected. That said, the food was pretty darned good...I'd give the food alone 3 (or maybe a bit more) stars. I had the pulled pork and it was EXCELLENT...nice, smoky flavor and a generous portion. The fries were just so so. Our waitress never stopped by the table to check on our meal, nor did sh offer any drink refills. The food was good. But, based on the service, I'll choose someplace else next time I'm in St. Joseph.

  • Andrew G.

You're paying for the views and that's one of the few things I actually liked about this place. We sat on the patio outside and had great service from our waitress throughout the meal. I ordered the"jumbo perch" for a whopping $21, but there was nothing jumbo about it!!... $21 got me 4 bland pieces of perch. We notified our waitress and you could tell I wasn't the first person to feel cheated, as she agreed and offered 2 more pieces at no charge (great service!). After letting the manager know how I felt, he wasn't friendly or professional at all.. That was the last straw for me. I won't be back here! for less money, you can get better perch at Clementines down the street.

We dined before the evening rush, so we didn't have to wait and got to sit outside. We started with the loaded potato soup which we got without bacon. It was very good! I could have eaten it for a meal. My husband got the Ahi Tuna Salad. I got the Vegetarian Burger with Fries. It was all very good and the service was great!

Salmon BLT:-) Been "doing Shu's" since Shuler's etc. Good food, atmosphere is good and if you are lucky enough to score a window seat, you can see the bluff goings on and the lake.

I went here over Thanksgiving with my cousin. They have beer sampler which was kind of fun. It's not the most spectacular restaurant by any means but the food was good and reasonably priced. I would go back, but I would also like to try some of the other restaurants in the little shopping are behind it. The bartender was cool too but lacked the experience with the brews on tab to provide a good sampling. If you're looking to try and get educated, just say no. If you know your pallet for brew and you can tell what's what, the sampler could be a fun way to switch it up.

Loud and obnoxious atmosphere. Overall taste of food mediocre at best. The chefs are amateurs at best, hiding a pile of wasabi on the ahi salad plate was fucking mean as hell! I thought my dad was gonna die! THATS FUCKING WRONG!! If i ever come back to St. Joseph i will never eat here again. The circle of trust has been broken. Plus the service was awful. It took 20 mins plus for our drinks to come. Laaaaaaame!!!

Nice place! Had the perch sandwich and was impressed that they let the fish speak for itself! A bit understaffed, but the experience was very nice. Enjoyed watching how many people order the salmon patty special! Huge!

Joseph.
